The Greatest Show on Earth!

From what was at the beginning of a sport for people to enjoy at their leisure time, from a game which was only famous to the lower and lower middle class society to evolving into the most awaited tournament of the whole world. It's safe to say, without getting any eye rolls from the readers, that football has come a long way. Although modern football was invented in Britain in the 19th century, we know that an  earlier form of this game
was played in China during the Han Dynasty dating back to 206BC, where it was named Cuju.

Compared to that, the start of the tradition of organizing a world cup tournament every four years started only in 1930, when then President of FIFA Jules Rimet proposed the idea. Uruguay was the host nation for the tournament. It was the perfect place at that time to organize the tournament, they were the gold medalist of Football in the last two Olympics. As a result football was already at the peak of its popularity there. Although 16 teams were invited, only 13 teams participated. It was a success of course without a doubt. Uruguay won their first world cup beating Argentina in the final. The response of the masses was huge and FIFA made a whopping 200% profit from that particular tournament. Which encouraged them to move forward with organizing more tournaments in upcoming years.

The FIFA World Cup Tournament truly reached its global presence once the game started telecasting on television from 1954. People from all over the world were able to watch the game from their home, which helped the tournament reach the masses of every corner of the world.

No country from this subcontinent ever played in the world cup. The country that came close to playing the world cup was India in 1950, when every team from India's group withdrew from the tournament. Though India didn't go on to participate in the World Cup as All India Football Federation(AIFF) cited issues like travel cost, lack of preparedness and also giving importance to Olympics over FIFA World Cup.

Although no team has ever played in the World Cup from this subcontinent, the excitement isn't any less in this part of the world. Moreover it might not be an exaggeration to say that people from this part of the world are more excited and serious about football compared to some of the participating teams. Specially in Bangladesh, people are almost devoted to the teams they support. We see various countries' flags on top of the buildings. Flags of Brazil and Argentina are the most common ones that one can find during the World Cup season. Though one can surely say that there is no difference between this type of devotion and insanity. People are often found fighting with the fans of the opposite team, in the streets. There  are often cases of beating, bullying as well as death regarding disagreement.

The Fifa World Cup has enormous effects on people all around the world. The amount of influence it has on people has never been seen before. In 2005, when Ivory Coast qualified for the world cup for the very first time, it helped ending a civil war in Ivory Coast. This shows the level of impact and influence the FIFA World Cup has on people.

Bangladesh are very far away from qualifying from the World Cup, it's most likely that Bangladesh are not going to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in near future. But that won't stop this football crazy nation from cheering , staying up at night and praying for their favourite team.
