Salvation in Animation:Cartooon Network
I still remember those days when the younger exhausted version of me, after a long and tiring day at school, returned home and sat in front of the television, just to get a glimpse of my favorite icons carrying my tired soul to a world of imagination and fun. To the adults, it was just a regular television channel that broadcasted animated shows, but to me and all my peers, it was a medium of seeking pleasure and teleporting to a world without boundaries, without tasks, where our conscience could romp around freely. The renowned animated icons that mesmerized our childhood starred in shows like "Thunder cats", "Johnny Bravo", "Swat cats", "Courage the cowardly dog", "Kids next door", and the list went on and on. Other popular television channels aired animated series and shows but nothing could beat Cartoon Network's line-up. From having numerous posters taped on the walls of our room, to having bed sheets with the face of our favorite icons on top of them. Merchandise, and action figures sprawled all across the room, no wonder how much of the money saved was spent on weekends on these fragments of our memories that we are cherishing till now. The entertainment industry needed a strong and powerful project to grab the attention of the audience which included the youth mostly, and the job was perfectly carried out by Cartoon Network. With over 36 million followers on Facebook,3.4 million on Instagram, and 1.3 million followers on Twitter, about a billion youths, elderly and audiences of all ages still enjoy their leisure time, entertaining themselves with some of the classic tv shows that are still being aired today.
Some people might just say "What's the big deal? It's just another cartoon channel", but to many of us, it's way more than that. It's an emotion, an unbreakable bond that ties our present with our childhood. Sleepovers with friends had a separate session with each of us imitating our favorite icons, for example, for me it was "Liono" from Thunder cats, a brave warrior with the powers and abilities of a lion along with a team of amazing warriors, and a sword with extraordinary cosmic powers, set on a trek to defeat the vilest creatures that lurked on Earth and disturbed its harmony.
One might think what's new in this, it's just the same old action stuff. But no, Cartoon Network had its grasp over all the genres from the beginning. Comedy, Thriller, Action, and Educational, Cartoon Network made sure its audience was getting the taste of the various exotic flavors it had to exhibit. Johnny(from Johnny Bravo) and Courage(from Courage the cowardly dog show) ruled the realm of comedy, as they made us laugh our hearts out with all their witty jokes and absurdity. "Swat cats" and "Teen Titans " were rocking the action sector, while "MAD" an educational and innovative TV show ensured that children were learning a bit of academics while having fun. Unfortunately, the introduction of Social media and online gaming has dampened the effect Cartoon Network once had on children. The children of this era don't realize its true worth, they aren't as obsessed about the whole cartoon industry as we once were. However, many bright cartoonists are working for the channel and I hope they find out a way to make a startling comeback and enchant all the young hearts again.
