Bangladesh Cricket: We are still learning!

"We were so close but we couldn't finish the game properly", this has been a common post-match dialogue for all the Bangladeshi players. We won the ICC trophy in 1997 and got test status in 2000, since then  Bangladesh cricket has developed a lot but one thing we always suffer is that we can not win close games. On the other hand, we have some big wins over big teams like India, Australia, New Zealand, and so on.

Football is the most popular sport in the world and so in Bangladesh. But from the past decade, we have seen some changes in this popularity as the Bangladesh cricket team had more success in the international arena than the Bangladesh football team. Where Bangladesh's FIFA ranking decreased drastically,  Bangladesh's ICC ranking went upwards. Bangladesh currently holds the number 7 rank in ODI cricket, whereas the Bangladesh football team holds the number 192 rank in FIFA. That is why if you ask anyone who are the biggest stars in Bangladesh, they might answer Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal Khan, or Mashrafee Bin Mortuza, who are cricket players.

Bangladesh Won the ICC trophy in 1997 and got test status in 2000 but in the last 22 years, Bangladesh hasn’t won any major tournaments except the women's Asia Cup in 2018 and the Under 19 World Cup in 2020. Besides these, there are some historic wins like in the 2007 World cup Bangladesh beat India, in 2010 and 2012 Bangladesh whitewashed New Zealand by 4-0 and 5-0 wins in the ODI series, in the 2011 and 2015 world cup Bangladesh knocked out mighty England. Moreover, Bangladesh became the quarterfinalist in 2015 world cup, the semi-finalist in 2017 champions trophy and the finalist in the 2012,16, and 18 Asia cup. Since 2015 Bangladesh lost only one ODI series on their home ground. During this period, they have beaten Pakistan, South Africa, Srilanka, Afghanistan, and India. In addition, Bangladesh won test matches against England in 2016, Australia in 2017, and New Zealand in 2022. These are some of the biggest achievements in Bangladesh cricket.

In terms of personal achievements the first name that comes is Shakib Al Hasan, he has been. the number 1 all-rounder in all three formats since 2012.

He is without any doubt the biggest star in Bangladesh. He is also considered as the greatest allrounder of all time. On the other hand, Mushfiqure Rahim is the first and only wicket-keeper batsman to have two double-hundreds in test cricket. He is known as Mr. Dependable in Bangladesh cricket as he is the most reliable batsman.

Despite having some great team and personal successes we couldn't win any world cup or Asia cup yet. Yes, we became runners-up thrice in the Asia cup but in terms of winning big tournaments, we still lag behind. There are some major issues that hold us back from winning these tournaments. Firstly, there are some huge faults in our entire cricket structure.  We don't have any proper school cricket structure. We often see corruption in domestic games too. Moreover,  most of the domestic coaches are not well-trained. Besides these most of our players aren't mentally strong enough to cope in crucial situations. To solve these problems BCB took some positive steps like recording domestic matches, giving phycological training to the cricketers, and so on.

Bangladesh cricket has developed a lot, from losing badly we have started winning against big teams both at home and abroad. If the cricket board takes the necessary steps to make the cricket structure more organized we will see a strong pipeline of players, those who are capable to win the World Cup. On the other hand, if we stay like this we won't be able to achieve any big milestones and we will hear from our players, " We are still learning."
